What Is Quilting?

Quilting is a hobby that many people take up to fill some of their spare time. It is a great activity for those of you who like to get creative and offers you a fun alternative to the traditional sewing and knitting. If you are thinking about getting into something new, then why not give quilting a try? If you are not sure exactly what this is, then keep reading this article because we are going to be looking at what it is, a short history, the different types of quilting and how you can start simply all down below!

What Is Quilting?

The first thing that you probably want to know is what quilting is, and this is a good question. Quilting is the process of sewing two or more pieces of fabric together to make a thicker padded material. Most of the time, this is used to create a quilt or some kind of quilted material which can be used for a whole host of things. More often than not, you will find that there are three layers involved in quilting, the top layer of fabric which is known as the quilt top, a middle layer that is some kind of padding or insulation, and then the backing material. However, this is not always the case, and some people choose to do it differently.

You can use quilting to make something thicker or can raise one area of the fabric so that it stands out. If you want to learn how to quilt, but you are not sure you will be able to do it on your own, there are plenty of places that offer lessons to help you understand how to do this. You could even make some new friends from your new hobby.

A History

It is not exactly known what the origins of quilting are because the process used to quilt has been used for many years to make clothes. What they do know though, is that the earliest piece of quilted garment comes from a figure of a Pharaoh which dates all the way back to around 3400 BC from the Ancient Egyptian First Dynasty.

Quilting is used all over the world from Europe to America, to South Asia and so on. A lot of these places have their own different styles of quilts and many different ways to make them. In some places such as Sweden, wearing a quilted garment used to be a sign of great wealth, whereas in some places such as India, one of the types of quilting used here requires you to use scraps of material. It is different all over the world, but the result is beautiful all the same.

The Basics

There are a lot more steps involved in making a quilt than just the quilting itself, of course. You are going to need to design what you want to make first, then you can make sure you have all the pieces you need, start your applique and then bind it all together using the quilting method!

There are also a variety of different materials that you are going to need in order to do this properly. You need the fabric that you are going to be stitching together of course, and then you are going to need a needle and thread if you are hand quilting. If not, then a sewing machine is going to be necessary. There are different types of needles available to buy, and it is very important which you choose to the end result of your quilt. Make sure that you also have on hand something that you can measure with as you want to make sure that it is the right size.

Hand Quilting

Hand quilting is where you use a needle and thread to create a running stitch by hand across the entire area that you want to be quilted. You might find that a quilting frame or loop is necessary to help hold the material in the right place rather than keeping it in your lap the entire time. Quilting binds the pieces of material together to create one large, thick piece of material.

There are many different options when it comes to hand quilting and the kind of stitch that you use. Some people choose to use the method known as the rocking stitch where the quilter has one hand placed underneath, and another on top to pull the needle through each side. Or, you could think about using the stab stitch option, where you push the needle down from the right, and bring it back up on the other side to create the quilted pattern. Finally, you could opt for a third choice, which is known as loading the needle. If you attend classes, you will be taught a certain way to do this, but if you are interested in other methods, you can look these up online.

Machine Quilting

If hand quilting doesn’t sound like something that appeals to you, then you can always take up machine quilting. This requires either a longarm machine or a sewing machine to do the stitching for you, so you just need to make sure that you have tacked the material together first. Some people find this option more enjoyable as it takes less time to complete your project, whereas some prefer to hand stitch.

How To Start Simple

If you want to get into quilting but you are not sure how then you can either attend a class, or you can look at some online tutorials. When you are starting out, you want to make sure that you are starting small so that you can perfect your quilting method before you take it any further. The best thing that you can do is also choose a simple pattern such as either straight lines or squares. This way, you are getting the basics and creating something simple but beautiful while you are still getting the hang of things. Remember, you’ve got to walk before you can learn to run, so start small and then work your way up.
